Each language uses its own alphabet: Spanish Ñ, Portuguese and French Ç, German Ä, Ö, Ü and ẞ, Italian accented vowels. Every letter takes exactly one cell.

Our own word bank

Behind it is our own word bank: 2,397,570 playable words across the six languages, with plurals, genders and conjugations. 87,539 have a short definition in their own language and in English, and are sorted into 110 categories (animals, science, sports, jobs and more), so every puzzle can have the theme you want.

  • No surprises: a list of about 30,000 offensive or sensitive words is checked in every puzzle, horizontally and vertically, so none shows up by accident.
  • No odd forms: archaic and regional forms, proper nouns and sensitive topics are left out.
  • Draft until reviewed: words and definitions are written with AI help and stay as drafts until a native speaker approves them.

A firewall for bad words

Every puzzle goes through two filters: one before the words are chosen and one, written in Rust, after the grid is filled.

  1. Before: the blocklist

    A list of about 30,600 offensive or sensitive words, in all six languages and with all their forms, keeps them out of the word bank.

  2. After: the Rust check

    Once the grid is filled, the engine reads every row, column and diagonal in both directions, ignoring case and accents, and looks for any word on the list.

  3. It fixes itself

    If filler letters spell a blocked word by accident, one of them is changed and the grid is checked again until none is left. The words you hide are never touched.

  4. Fast

    A 30×30 grid is checked in milliseconds, so it happens on every puzzle without you noticing.

Is Lettras free?

Yes. Everything on Lettras is free to use and supported by ads.

Which languages can I make word searches in?

Spanish, English, Portuguese, French, German and Italian.

Are accents and letters like Ñ kept?

Yes. Each language uses its native letters, one per cell, so "piña" takes four cells with its Ñ. If you prefer, classic mode strips the accents.

Can I print the word search?

Yes. The generator makes a printable PDF with the answer key and no watermark.
